NEWS & NOTES
March 7, 2010
“LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER”: The Prayer Board (in the Annex hallway) is for everyone who knows of someone in need of special prayer. You are encouraged to bring your prayer requests to the church office. This week we commend to the Lord’s care Bob Schone, Ron McDonald, Carolyn Uhnken, David Lakamp, Rose Robinson, Byron Ommen, Nicholas French, Alvin Magelitz, Deby Morris, Terri Schneider, Ray Leutz, Sonny Zimmer, Logan Nobis, George Kording, Kay Jones. |
Sunday School: Growing in Christ Sunday School Superintendent: Kevin Tavender
Today, the Sunday School classes learned about Jesus’ miracle of feeding 5,000 hungry people (John 6:1–14). They learned that in His love, God promises to care for all our physical and spiritual needs and gives us the greatest treasure—His Son and the gifts of forgiveness, life, and salvation. As a family, talk about the many ways that God has provided for both your physical and spiritual needs. In the catechism, look at the explanation to the First Article of the Apostles’ Creed.
ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS: THE GOSPEL OF LUKE:We are reading through the Gospel of Luke aided by a PowerPoint projector presentation of hundreds of colored slides! Join us in the Fellowship Hall 9:15 am.
ADULT BIBLE CLASS- We have begun a study on “Trees” in the Bible. Wood is involved in many stories of faith and deliverance in Scripture. This study will be led by Mr. Busseau in the 7th & 8th grade classroom in the building on the west parking lot.

GLIMPSE OF KINDERGARTEN Mark your calendar for Thursday, March 18th at 6:30 PM. Salem will hold its annual Glimpse of Kindergarten to allow prospective families and students to preview our Kindergarten program. Please join us for this informative event so that you may: explore the classroom, browse through curriculum and assessments, meet the teacher, and learn more about the daily schedule, policies, etc. Questions about tuition, lunch payments, and extracurricular opportunities will also be answered. Some families have already visited the classroom and you are welcome to do so at any time. This is the best opportunity to ask questions and share your individual concerns about your child. Feel free to contact the school office or Miss Dufelmeier to set up a visit, either during the school day or after school. We look forward to offering an overview of our Christ-centered education at Salem!
STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT- 1 Corinthians 10:1-13: Paul reminded the Corinthians of the example of the Children of Israel who were often unfaithful to God and His commands, and instead focused on the things of this life It was poor stewardship on their part to neglect their relationship with God as their number one priority. This was written (St. Paul says) as a warning to us to put first things first. Godly stewards do the right things for the right reasons.
MISSION OUTREACH - Luke 13:1-9: Jesus used the illustration of an unfruitful fig tree to point out clearly how important the fruits of faith are to us Christians. One of the sweetest fruits of faith is telling others about the good news of amnesty from sin through the saving work of Jesus.

LIFE LINES Written by Jeanne Strubbe Life Ministry Coordinator Salem Lutheran Church, Jacksonville, IL
How bad does it have to get for our nations leaders to stand up and say, “Enough is enough?”
A news story recently reported by LifeNews.com stated that officials were investigating an abortion center in that city after a woman died from a botched abortion last November. But, they found more than they could have imagined when they discovered the frozen remains of dozens of late-term babies who were killed in abortions from as long as thirty years ago.
The abortion center known as the Women’s Medical Society and run by Kermit Gosnell has seen its share of dubious activity over the years, but nothing as sickening as finding the bodies of the babies. Gosnell’s abortion center has been shut down as the investigation into the death of one of his patients continues. It seems Gosnell gave the deceased woman massive amounts of painkillers as a result of the botched abortion. Furthermore, Gosnell is accused of illegally prescribing the painkillers and allowing an unlicensed staff member participate in the abortion in question. So far, as a result of the abortion death, Gosnell's medical license has been temporarily suspended, but he has not yet been charged with anything illegal. Troy Newman, the president of the pro-life group Operation Rescue, stated that the suspension order described "deplorable and unsanitary" conditions at the clinic, indicating that "there was blood on the floor, and parts of aborted fetuses were displayed in jars." The suspension order declared Gosnell to be "an immediate and clear danger to the public health and safety." Newman further stated the notion that legalizing abortion made it safer for women is fiction. "This is not the exception to the rule in our nation's abortion clinics. It is standard operating procedure," he said. "This clinic is no better than a back alley abortion mill, and in fact may be worse." "Collecting the remains of dead babies over a 30 year time frame is reminiscent of the actions of deranged serial killers who keep body parts as trophies. It doesn't get much sicker than that," he added. Clearly, people involved in the business of killing humans on a daily basis have no regard for the rights of humans and do not recognize the human body as the temple of the Holy Spirit.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

New Sanctuary Open Forum with architect Elmer Wind
About 80 members attended an open forum on a master plan for a new sanctuary on the north-east corner of our campus. Architect Elmer Wind of St. Louis and the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod Foundation gave a PowerPoint projector presentation. An animation of a possible plan for the sanctuary along with color drawings was presented. Applause concluded this very informative meeting with the architect. No decision to build a new sanctuary has yet been made by Salem's Voters' Assembly.

Mortgage Burning
February 1, 2009
About 70 Salem members gathered to burn the mortgage on our Annex. The mortgage was about $1.0 million for a term of 25 years. By God's grace which motivated us to sacrificial giving, we paid off the mortgage in 15 years. In 1994 the total cost of the Annex and school enhancements was about $1.4 million. Salem is now debt and mortgage free!

Easter: He Is Risen!ReformationFamily Fun DayVolleyball
He Is Risen!
Jesus Christ is alive forever. We have a risen and living Savior and Lord, who died and rose again for the sin of all people. May we live each day in the light of that Easter joy with sins forgiven and with Jesus in our lives as an ever present help in every trouble.

MARTIN LUTHER AND THE REFORMATION
On October 31, 1517 God moved Dr. Martin Luther (A. D. 1483-1546), an Augustinian monk and Doctor of Old Testament theology, to nail what has become known as the Ninety-five Theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. These theses or sentences attacked the Roman Catholic practice and teaching of indulgences, which sold forgiveness for money. Pope Leo the 10th had issued an official proclamation, called an indulgence, which offered to sell the forgiveness of sins for both the living and dead, without the presence of sorrow over sin or faith in Christ. John Tetzel, a Dominican monk, became wealthy selling these indulgences, this forgiveness paperwork, in the area near Wittenberg, Germany where Luther lived. Tetzel was a large, eloquent man with a flare for sales psychology. His arrival was announced some weeks before his visit to a town. When he finally arrived, the whole town would come out to greet him with a great celebration. In the town square, Tetzel gave his first sermon on "Hell," in which he pictured the place of the damned in language made vivid with fire and brimstone. The second sermon which dramatically portrayed the sufferings of the relatives of the townspeople in "Purgatory" was spoken in the town cathedral. He would ask his audience, if they could not hear the wailing and suffering cries of their relatives rising up from purgatory, while they, their descendants, enjoyed their inheritance here on earth. Tetzel's third sermon was on the joys of "Heaven." How sweet and peaceful were the souls in heaven in contrast to the sufferings of the poor souls in hell! Now the audience was ripe for the sale of the indulgences. Tetzel sold the indulgence paperwork to the people based on their ability to pay. Businessmen would have to pay as much as $80, while the poor were charged only $7! After this selling of forgiveness had gone on for a few years, Martin Luther in righteous indignation posted his Ninety-five Theses against this indulgence traffic. While Luther posted these statements with the intention of sparking a scholarly dialogue within the Roman Catholic Church, God used this event to trigger the Lutheran Reformation, the fruits of which Protestant churches still enjoy, today. The Lutheran Reformation continues to be celebrated, because through this renewal of the church the Holy Spirit taught the church the biblical doctrine of justification by God’s grace through faith alone in Jesus Christ as Savior. Justification, this teaching of forgiveness through Christ alone, is the central doctrine of the Bible by which the church stands and continues to grow.
